Scotland’s Hollie Davidson is set to become the first woman referee to officiate the men’s World Rugby U20 Championship in South Africa, scheduled to take place from 24 June to 14 July

The Championship returns for the first time since the pandemic with the tournament.

The 30-year-old, who refereed the women’s Rugby World Cup final between New Zealand and England, said the following on officiating at the U20 Championship: “The U20’s is a great opportunity to make a step into next stage of the World Rugby men’s test.”

Davidson also made history when she took charge of the Portugal vs Italy international becoming the first female to officiate a men’s Six Nation in a test match.

Davidson added: “To be honest, I see this as maybe the first step on that journey (to the men’s Rugby World Cup). What’s most important now is that I go down there and put in performances that I am proud of, which will allow me to continue that journey.”

She will also take on the assistant referee role in a few warm-up matches ahead of the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

She concluded: “It’s fine me being there but if I don’t perform then it’s maybe a backward step. So I just need to stay focused and then hopefully the journey continues after the Junior World Cup.”
