Poland’s Iga Swiatek has etched her name in tennis history becoming only the fourth and youngest player to win the “Sunshine Double” of Indian Wells and Miami Open in the same year.

The 20-year-old defeated Naomi Osaka 6-4,6-0 in the Miami Open on Saturday, 2 April 2022.

Swiatek has also been officially confirmed as world No.1 with the new WTA rankings announced on Monday, 4 April.

Her win makes her the first player from Poland and the first player born in the 2000s to reach No. 1 in either ATP or WTA rankings.

“I feel privileged to be among those players who have done this double before, I knew it would be tough playing these tournaments in a row, but I took it step by step,” said Swiatek after her victory.

For former world No.1 Osaka said the run to the final in Miami has at least given her renewed hope of returning to the top after a spell out of tennis in 2021 to deal with mental health issues.

“Iga is quite different from the other players I have played against. She is very explosive but I’m not as disappointed as I’ve been before after losses.

“It was a sad outcome but a fun day,” Osaka concluded.
