Ten of the best female surfers in South Africa are currently in Mozambique, preparing for the start of the inaugural Roxy Invitational which is set to take place at one of the perfect right-hand point-breaks in the area.
This ground-breaking surf contest for Women is a first in Africa and offers a R10000 first prize, R3000 for second and R2000 for third.
Forecasts look good for swell in the southern Mozambique area for the rest of the week, and the event will run on the one day during the week when the waves are at their best.
The contest venue is a long, perfect sand bottom point-break and to help with the paddling there will be jet ski assistance for the girls in their heats.
A diverse bunch of invited surfers include the likes of former WCT stalwart Heather Clark of Port Shepstone, East London’s in-form Nikita Robb, fresh from her win at the recent Roxy Surf Jam, and Michelle Hill of St. Francis.
Also included is SA Junior team member Chantelle Rautenbach of Melkbosstrand, and under-14 star Heidi Palmboom, of the Bluff.
Other invited surfers are WP Champion Stacey Guy of Melkbosstrand, South Africa’s top Under 18 surfer Tarryn Chudleigh of Kommetjie, 12 year old Sarah Baum of the Bluff and top rated South African surfer Sarah Maritz of Warner Beach.
Durban surfers Danielle le Roux and Kirsty Delport and Telana Flanagan of East london make up the group of ten.
“The girls have had an amazing warm up surf. The waves are clean, the water’s so blue, there isn’t a breath of wind and the waves are just running perfectly along the point,” said Quiksilver and Roxy Marketing Manager Dane Patterson.
“It looked like the swell was pushing a bit as well. The girls were getting such long rides, and it was so much fun out there. If it carries on like this there is a good chance that the event will happen early in the week.”
The event is a collaboration between Roxy and Saltwater GIRL Magazine, with Saltwater GIRL Magazine and is supported by Virgin Mobile and Resolution Health.
The contest will be broadcast on an upcoming episode of Boardriders TV.
