Judoka Donne Breytenbach claimed top honours at the fifth edition of the African Open in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
The pinnacle of African Judo saw ten countries participating, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Congo-Brazzaville, Ivory Coast, Gabon, Guinea, Ireland, South Africa, Senegal, and hosts Cameroon bringing the continental showcase to completion.
In the end, South Africa finished fifth on the medal table with two of the nation’s three medals coming from the ladies’ divisions.
Top honours go to the 19-year-old South African, Breytenbach, who won gold in the women’s -57 kg weight category, beating Oumy Kamara of Senegal in the final.
The bronze medal went to Kevine Gadjen of Cameroon, after she defeated her country-mate, Brenda Djona.
Physically intimidating and charismatically competitive, Alexandra Nenova showed power and strength as she defeated Cameroonian GaeLie Mazode to progress to the final of the -63 kg category.
As a rematch to their most recent fight against in 2020, Nenova battled it out with Jeannette Etoua but, once again, Etoua outclassed Alexandra to win her third consecutive African Open gold medal.
The African Open was sanctioned as a world ranking event.
