Kommetjie, the epicentre of surfing on the Cape Peninsula, will host the grand finale of the third annual Kahuna Surf Series on the weekend with the entry level surf break of Long Beach the most likely venue.
Sanctioned by Western Province Surfing, the series crowns champions in Under 10, U12, U14 and U16 divisions for boys and girls after three events held in the most popular surfing areas in Cape Town.
The KSS is designed to encourage and foster competition surfing by restricting entry to novices and future surf stars who have not previously won a nationally rated event.
Generously supported by many of the country’s top surf industry brands, there are prizes worth thousands of Rands at stake for the event finalists and the top three on the series-ending ratings in each division, along with major bragging rights for the champions.
Caitlin Morris (St James) and the consistent Jessie Goodman (Oranjezicht) are neck-and-neck in the U16 girls, with Anna Notton slipping to third after failing to make the final at Melkbos.
Marianna Meyer (Mossel Bay) and Amy Bosworth (Kommetjie) are in line for the U14 girls’ series crown, as ratings leader Alex Morris has decided to contest a national event in Durban this weekend.
Tosca Wynand and Tylah Terblanche, two of the eight surfers from the Micah Surf Club in Macassar whose participation in the 2007 KSS is being sponsored by sportswear giant Puma, are assured of series medals and prizes after placing second and third respectively in the U12 girls at Melkbos.
For the third consecutive year all seven 2007 Kahuna Surf Series champions will be awarded gold medals and receive custom fitted Reef Wetsuits. The U16 girls’ champion pick up a Freestyle watch, and will be styling in a pair of Von Zipper eyewear.
The best overall best performer in the series gets a custom built DVG surfboard from renowned local shaper Dave Van Ginkel and the top local performers in each event walk off in a pair of Kustom footwear.
Every competitor and many of the spectators, takes home something, with plenty of fun beach promotions while the finalists in each division share prizes generously donated by sought after brands such as Billabong, Reef Wetsuits, Palmer’s surf wax and accessories, Zigzag surf magazine, Lifestyle Surf Shop, Island Style accessories, Surf Zone surf shop, Rusty apparel, Fox and Lizzard.
