My name is Keshnie Nair and I attend Parktown High School for Girls. I was glad to be part of Cell C’s Take a Girl Child to Work Day, and had the pleasure to attend a seminar at the Cell C offices with my role model, Kass Naidoo.
The night before the event I was very nervous. It felt like the 1999 Cricket World Cup Semi Final between South Africa and Australia. I went to bed, tried to sleep, yet I couldn’t, because thoughts of the day ahead excited me.
The big day finally arrived; I waited for this day for months. I changed into my best clothes, and my brother and I left for the Cell C building, where the seminar was held.
As I walked through the doors, my attention was immediately drawn by Kass and at that exact moment, my heart skipped a beat. (It’s not often that a girl gets to touch eyeballs with her role model.)
I introduced myself, and we chatted about cricket, and how our love for this beautiful game began. I then met her husband and Managing Editor of gsport … for Girls! Ryk Meiring, who is a true gentleman.
Kass gave me a lot of useful advice and tips on how to be a cricket presenter. She also exposed me to the difficulties; like how some people struggled to accept her in this line of work.
We proceed to the auditorium where the seminar was to begin. We watched a 10 minute video clip showcasing the history behind the Take a Girl Child to Work Day initiative, which was very informative.
Kass was the guest of honour. She gave a wonderful speech on her experiences as a woman in a male dominated field and the importance of supporting women.
She mentioned her mother’s reaction when she said she wanted to be a cricket presenter; her mother thought it would be best if she became a teacher.
After Kass’ speech, the seminar ended and so too was the end of my unforgettable morning with Kass.
I have learnt a lot from Kass and just speaking to her has changed my life in many ways, because now I am more determined then ever and have more faith in myself to pursue my dream. Meeting Kass felt like a step forward to making my dream come alive.
I would like to express my gratitude to Kass and Ryk for inviting me to spend the morning with them. It was one of the most memorable mornings I have ever had. Spending time with them has been very informative, and I loved every second of it.
