When newly crowned Wimbledon Women’s Wheelchair Doubles Champion Kgothatso Montjane came through the doors at OR Tambo International Airport’s arrivals, there was a burst of excitement from a lively group of friends, family, sponsors, media, and onlookers welcoming her home after another historic achievement.

Now a triple Grand Slam winner, Montjane seemed overwhelmed by the fuss as the media jostled to get the best shot of her and her silverware.

One of the big challenges for women in sport is securing funding to pursue their global dreams. Through the incredible support of Emy Casaletti and Optimize Agency, Montjane has grown into one of South Africa’s top sports ambassadors.

Montjane’s personal sponsors were out in full support! Discovery, Syensqo, Avon/Justine, Mahindra, Dunlop, Ottobock, Air Liquide, Nike, and Macsteel were all there to welcome back their champion.

Tennis South Africa and government personnel from both national and provincial levels, including representatives from Gauteng and Limpopo, were present alongside national officials.

Montjane understands the importance of strong media relations and spent a long time answering questions from various media houses, not once getting flustered despite a long flight home.

She told the awaiting media that she wants more to be done for wheelchair tennis and hopes this latest win will shine a spotlight on the sport and inspire more youngsters to pick up a racquet.

It was heartwarming for Montjane’s family—her mother, brother, sister, and others were there to welcome her back!

While it feels like she has reached the summit, knowing Montjane and her achievements over the last few years, the best is yet to come!

Through efforts from athletes like Montjane, hopefully, there will come a time when the airport is thronging with thousands of supporters ready to welcome back more women in sport heroes.

Thank you, KG, for once again putting South Africa and women’s sport on the map!
