Home favourite Kgothatso Montjane has won her first Joburg Open singles title, at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Centre in Soweto on Wednesday, when the world number 8 Montjane edged out second seed Nalani Buob from Switzerland in the women’s final.

Montjane dominated Buob from the start as the Swiss never managed to steady her erratic serve. Montjane ended the Swiss top ace’s hope of a fourth title in Jabavu in just less than an hour.

The 31-year-old Montjane enjoyed a double triumph, after she clinched the doubles title with Israel’s Veronica Zvik. The second seeds got the better of Mariska Venter and Nalani Boub from Switzerland, winning 4-6 6-1 [10-8].

The South African-Israeli pair recovered from a second set meltdown to claim the title in a hard-fought match.
