Kirsten Kingma (Hout Bay) was crowned the Kahuna Surf Series champion in the premier U16 girls divisions at an awards ceremony in Kommetjie on Sunday, after the completion of the third and final event of the 2006 series.
The U14 girls series crown went to Sabrina Scott (Glencairn Heights) clinching the U14 girls, while Constance Haas (Plumstead) was awarded the U12 girls gold medal on a count-back to the first event at Muizenberg, when she finished level on points with Adele Outin (Oranjezicht) in the series ratings.
Long Beach in Kommetjie produced ideal conditions for the final event with bright sunshine, an offshore breeze and half to one metre (2-3 foot) surf that provided an excellent stage for the Western Cape’s rising surf stars to display their talents.
Kingma’s wave selection and snappy manoeuvres proved too good in the U16 girls’ final, but she was challenged all the way to the end of the heat by Scott with the St James based duo of Alex Morris and Anna Notten placing third and fourth respectively.
After struggling early on, Scott scored a convincing win in the U14 girls’ division via two great rides in the last five minutes of the final. Morris and Notten grabbed the second and third positions with Ashleigh Hart, last year’s U12 and U16 series champ, placing fourth.
The U12 girls’ division saw just two competitors brave the powerful Atlantic ocean surf and frigid water temperatures with Adele Outin (Oranjezicht) reversing the result of the first event of the series at Muizenberg by narrowly defeating close friend Haas.
The series champions in the age categories are invited to attend a three day advanced surf camp at the KSA in Kommetjie in early January that will cover all aspects of high performance surfing including ocean knowledge, fitness and nutrition, manoeuvre analysis, practice drills and contest tactics and strategies.
