by | Jun 25, 2022

Rising South African swimmer Lara van Niekerk won Team SA’s only medal at the World Championships after claiming bronze in the 50m breaststroke final on Saturday, 25 June 2022.

Van Niekerk also made headlines becoming only the second SA woman to win a medal at the championships, after Tatjana Schoenmaker’s 200m breaststroke silver in 2019.

The 19-year-old touched the wall in a time of 29.90, behind Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania, who won in 29.70 and Italian teenager Benedetta Pilato in second place (29.80).
