Van Niekerk also made headlines becoming only the second SA woman to win a medal at the championships, after Tatjana Schoenmaker’s 200m breaststroke silver in 2019.
The 19-year-old touched the wall in a time of 29.90, behind Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania, who won in 29.70 and Italian teenager Benedetta Pilato in second place (29.80).
