Spring is well and truly here, which means it is time to start getting ready for the last of the five SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge races held around the country, at the Old Parktonians on Sunday October 14.
The Challenge has become part of Johannesburg’s early summer calendar with thousands of women from all over Gauteng take part in this race, and some of South Africa’s top runners anticipated to be taking part.
But the race is all about the thousands of ordinary women of all ages who take part, and provisions laid on include plenty of water points to keep entrants from becoming dehydrated, while the atmosphere at the finish is all about fun and entertainment.
Walkers are also invited to take part, and for the less energetic there is also a 5km Fun Run. The Challenge is open to all females over the age of 15, and the Fun Run is open to girls over the age of nine.
Some of the great prizes on offer including a year’s supply of groceries in the form of SPAR vouchers to the value of R12 000, while the popular ‘Bring a Friend Competition’ is open to contestants who have taken part in previous races, where winning vouchers worth R1000 and R500 for your friend are up for grabs.
The good news is that while you are having fun taking part in this event, you will be helping to raise awareness of breast cancer and other cancers affecting women.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and part of the proceeds from the race goes towards this worthy cause. Many breast cancer survivors take part in the race and are proof that breast cancer is not a death sentence.
The first 6 000 pre-entrants will receive a free race t-shirt, and the first 6 000 finishers will receive a medal and a goodie bag. So don’t delay – get your entry in soon.
Entry forms are available from all SPAR, SUPERSPAR and KWIKSPAR stores or online at the SPAR website . The entry fee for the 10km Challenge is R22.40. Contestants who are not members of a registered club need to buy a temporary licence, which costs R16.80. The entry fee for the Fun Run is R22.40 and no temporary licence is required.
