An excited Liryn de Jager has told gsport that she was surprised but really excited to have won the Feature Writer of the Year award at last night’s SAB Sports Journalist of the Year gala, held at the Wanderers Club in Johannesburg.
The Rapport sports writer was one of only two women winners on the night, when SuperSport’s Riana Kruger shared the Sports Programme of the Year award alongside John Clingen.
“It’s basically recognition of what I have been doing for the past 6 years now. Its great getting recognition, especially being a woman, and its amazing to have your work appreciated,” says Liryn.
She has just returned from Spain, where she followed Shosholoza’s progress in the Americas Cup.
“It was fantastic! We think the Shosholoza story is big, but you won’t get the full picture of how big it is, unless you’re there.
“We didn’t make it to the semis, but we did really well for a small team. We came seventh and even the commentators were raving about Shosholoza,” said Liryn.
Liryn’s main sport is tennis, but she also enjoys writing about swimming, netball, hockey and golf.
She says: “If there is a feature and a story to be told, even if its on a boxer, I will write it.”
Like the rest of South Africa, Liryn is anxiously awaiting tomorrow’s Super 14 semifinals, when the Sharks and Bulls battle it out against the Blues and Crusaders, respectively.
“I am eternal optimist, so I am hoping for a full South Africa final next week. I think the Bulls are going to have a difficult time because the Crusaders have not lost in the semifinals yet.
"But with the packed Loftus, and the whole of South Africa behind both teams, I think we will have an all-SA final next week.”
gsport congratulates these two award-winning women!
