South Africa’s mixed 4x400m relay quartet twice lowered the national under-20 record and the country’s women advanced across three disciplines as the World Athletics U20 Championships opened at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon in the United States on Wednesday, 5 August 2026.
Ryno Riekert, Zanté van der Merwe, Abelines Schoeman and Isabella Gunter ran 3:22.12 in the morning heats, taking down the South African under-20 record and booking the country’s place in the evening final. Team management then made a single change, bringing Davida Strong in for Van der Merwe, and the reshaped quartet went quicker still, placing sixth in 3:21.48 and lowering the record a second time inside a day.
Riekert and Schoeman handled the men’s legs in both rounds and Gunter ran in both, with Van der Merwe and Strong sharing the second women’s leg across the two races. The United States won the title in a championship record of 3:15.31 through Joshua Shelton, Taylor-Nicole Overton, Jaelen Hunter and Olivia Harris.
Ashlynn Norman gave South Africa its clearest medal prospect of the opening day. The long jumper landed at 6.11m in qualifying and secured her place in Thursday’s final, jumping 38 centimetres inside her season’s best of 6.49m and leaving room to improve when it counts.

Rumé Burger came closest to a place in a sprint final without reaching one. Burger finished fourth in her 100m semifinal in 11.53, six hundredths of a second away from the last qualifying position, in an event led all season by Jamaica’s Shanoya Douglas.
Carise van Rooyen kept South Africa’s middle-distance campaign alive, placing third in her 800m heat in 2:06.52 to progress to the semifinals on Friday. Van Rooyen carries the quickest South African entry mark in the event at 2:03.44.
The women’s programme thickens considerably on the second day. Fortune Cletus-Okolo and Johanne Lamprecht open the shot put qualifying round, Megan Nieman and Tumi Ramokgopa take on the 400m hurdles heats after both entered the championships in two hurdles events, and Christi Loggenberg and Strong run the 400m heats. Lara Stander and Andrea Steynberg contest the 1500m heats in the late session, with Norman’s long jump final following shortly afterwards.

South Africa also lines up in the heats of the mixed 4x100m relay, an event making its World Athletics U20 Championships debut in Eugene and one in which no championship record yet exists.
The championships have drawn more than 1800 athletes from 147 member federations, the largest field in the 40-year history of the event, and run at Hayward Field until Sunday, 9 August 2026.
