Du Plessis was very happy with her performance as she was coming back from a three-month layoff but did express her concern about the weather. “I still need to work on my fitness level which is not up to scratch at the moment.

"I hope to go all the way in the tournament but it is going to be tough since I struggle in the heat,” added du Plessis.

There were also good wins for third seed Dennett Rachelle, fifth-seeded Chantal Simpson, and sixth seed Annelie van der Heever.

Wednesday’s women’s singles matches start from 11am after the men’s singles first day of the match, and feature du Plessis against Amy Anstey, Rachelle Dennett v Lara van Rooyen, Chane Hines v Debbie van Aswegen, Bankane Magakgala v Hedda Wolmarans, Chantal Simpson v Helena Mowatt, Annelie vd Heever v Bronwyn Davidson, Megan Sporndli v Lisa Wade, and Jade Pondicas v Kim Rudman.
