Seven-time Ethiopian Women’s Premier League top goalscorer Loza Abera reveals sponsorship backing will improve the state of the women’s game in her country.

Recently, Abera took to social media to share the good news of her historical feat, Tweeting: “In Ethiopian women’s premier league history, I have become the highest goal scorer for the 7th time. I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me. Philippians 4:13”

The football star, who was born and raised in Durame City in the Southern region of Ethiopia, says her love for sport developed at a young age where she would play with boys on a small field in the neighbourhood.

She then went on to dedicate her life to football and proudly represent her country in her later years.

Speaking with Rudene Hare, Abera chats more about her journey and shares advice to upcoming footballers.

Welcome to gsport, Loza! Please tell us more about who you are and where you hail from.

My name is Loza Abera, I am a soccer player for the Ethiopian women’s national team and the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia. I was born and raised in Durame City in the Southern region of Ethiopia.

Where does your love for sport come from?

My love for sport came from my childhood, playing with boys on a small field in the neighbourhood.

You have been crowned the top goal scorer for the 7th time in the Ethiopian Women’s Premier League. What does it mean to you to have achieve this feat once again?

I am very proud to be the top scorer for the 7th time in the history of the Ethiopian Women’s Premier League and to make this history and to be the first player.

Looking at the state of women’s sport in Ethiopia, what can the media do to continue closing the visibility gap?

As the mass media has the potential to do a lot of work, our media have to do a lot in terms of promoting Ethiopian women’s sport.

What advice can you give to young girls who would one day want to pursue a career in football?

If young female athletes want to become great soccer players, they must be very strong, hardworking and must not forget their goals.

What is the state of sponsorship of women’s football like in Ethiopia?

The sponsorship here is not bad, but is not working sufficiently, to be honest.

How do you think it can be improved?

Now football is business, so sponsorship is improving by relevant institutions and stakeholders and those who want to help the sport.

What is your message to corporate giants on why they should financially back women footballers in your country?

The contribution of organizations and people who love sport is not easy for the growth and development of our country’s football, so I invite you (sponsors) to do your part.

Lastly, what can we look out for from Loza?

You can be on the look out for more hard work, living for a purpose, working with passion, living with football discipline and respecting the coaches.
