Enthusiastic cycling professional Lynnette Burger (Cycle Lab) makes no secret about the fact that she thinks lap racing is the most exciting format for racing your bicycle. “If it is a lap race, count me in,” says Burger.
“I love lap races. It gives the spectators an idea of what cycling is all about. What I really like about the OUTsurance Tshwane Mayoral Ride is the fact that there will be a defining moment in every lap. That makes for really challenging racing in front of a whole lot of spectators,” she said.
“Going up against the climb at the Union Buildings in Pretoria is going to be hard but most cyclists with a little bit of training will be able to manage that. The fun starts when you have to go up the same climb for a second time.
“By the third time it is becoming a mental challenge because your body will start to rebel,” said the dynamic cyclist currently competing for South Africa in Algiers, during the ninth All Africa Games.
“Then there is still the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh laps. I think anybody who plans to win the OUTride will have to be very clever.”
According to Burger you have to time your attack to perfection. “A lap too soon or a lap too late and it might be all over.”
Burger is one of South Africa’s most versatile riders, and she has had a busy time in the last few weeks. Other than scooping a Bronze medal for South Africa at the African Games, she was also part of the SA women’s cycling team for the Chong Ming Tour in China, where she managed to finish 6th in two of the four stages.
