The Blue Bulls has named heavyweight coaches for the SA Rugby Women’s Premier Division competition with the appointment of their new coaching staff.
The franchises revealed that former Springbok Women’s Captain Mandisa Williams has been appointed as the assistant coach of the Bulls Daisies. Williams will assist Hayden Groepes who has been named the Head Coach.
Williams holds extensive experience in the women’s game, she was the administrator for the Border Rugby Women’s junior and senior teams.
Speaking on her new venture, Williams told gsport: “Rudene this is one hell of a great life changing opportunity for all of us, coaches to athletes.”
“I received a call from the Bulls Company last year October that was so unreal and I asked for time to think about this because I was never a coach before. I was Border Rugby Union Women Administrator from senior to junior girls rugby. It only took me a few hours to decide and I gave it a shot.”
She added: “It’s work in progress but working as a women’s professional coach is groundbreaking especially for women in SA Rugby. It has been a dream to have ladies semi or professional and the decision by Bulls Company after the World Cup in NZ shows that professionalism of Women’s Rugby is overwhelming and a huge step up the ladder.”
“Ladies are now working to earn something out of rugby. They will probably work to attract more support and sponsors to grow the game in the country, more girls and young women need to be motivated so we can have a bigger development pool to sustain the project and probably work to give SARU best material in future,” she concluded.
Blue Bulls Company Special Projects and Women’s Rugby High-Performance Manager, Thando Manana said in a statement released by the Bulls: “The landscape for women’s rugby (and women’s sports across the board) is finally shifting and one of the major challenges facing women’s sports has always been accessibility,”
“Thanks to the most recent Rugby World Cup, a conversation on having a women’s United Rugby Championship has started. When that day comes, we want to be one of the South African team’s participating.”
