Mabel Mankgele scored the upset of the 2012 ACSA Eastern Cape Open, when she claimed the scalp of top seed Mariska Venter 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 to win the women’s division.
Mankgele showed total domination in the opening set, racing to a 5-2 lead, before Venter fought back to capture the set 7-5.
It was however Mankgele who shook the ghosts of the preceding set to claim the next two sets 6-4 6-3 to not only take the singles title but in the process revenge her previous defeat against Venter. The head-on-head score for these two in 2012 is 4 vs 1.
