Banyana Banyana have comfortably beaten neighbours Botswana 3-0 at the Moruleng Stadium, dominating possession and dictating the pace of play for the majority of the international friendly on Monday, 10 December, 2012.
The home side afforded the visitors little room to find their feet, and when Botswana did manage to gain possession, a lack of confidence often gifted the ball back to a model defensive pattern of play by the South Africans.
Banyana Banyana dominated the 1st half, with regular striker Andisiwe Mgcoyi putting SA in the lead from open play in the 12th minute, before Jermaine Seoposenwe’s 25th-minute pin-point corner cross found Refiloe Jane, who rose to head the ball between defender and far-side post with admirable precision for a 2-0 half-time cushion.
The two sides sparred for a few minutes as the second half got underway, but fresh legs in Noko Matlou, who subbed Andisiwe Mgcoyi with 27 minutes to go, bore immediate results, as the former CAF African Football of the Year headed home from a perfect cross in her second touch of the match.
The match signals a welcome boost for coach Mkhonza and his team ahead of their next assignment at their third Cyprus Cup, an invite-only festival of leading international women’s football that has been a key ingredient in the South African team’s progress in recent years.
