Maritz and Simon out of Open

Ashleigh Simon and Laurette Maritz, the pair of South Africans playing in the Weetabix Women’s British Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes, have failed to make the cut.

Simon, making her debut in a golf major, carded a second round 3 over par 75, an improvement on her opening round 77, but a score insufficient to make it past the half-way cut on a course made difficult by the hot weather conditions in Europe.

Maritz also carded an opening round 77, and enjoyed a great first 13 holes on day two, from where an even-par day progressed to a disappointing 7-over 79, following double bogies on 14 and 17, and a triple-bogey on 18.

After the first two rounds, USA’s Juli Inkster leads with a 6-under 138, followed by second-placed Italian Silvia Cavalleri scoring a 3-under 141.
