The Maroon Machine made it two wins from two in PE with another strong display, this time beating UWC 76-37 on Monday evening.

The first quarter started with a quick game of tit for tat between the two teams, with both goal shooters showing their muscle. Sian Moore from Maties and Jaumbuaije Zauana from UWC scored fantastic goals for their respective teams. Maties played a fast-paced game which led to UWC making a number of unforced errors. Mistakes that cost them dearly with Maties clinical on attack. The Maties defence was relentless and the UWC attack were thwarted by it. The first quarter ended 7-22 in Maties’ favour.

UWC failed to capitalise as they missed a number of shots, losing the ball to Maties, who went on to extend their lead.

Nichole Taljaard of Maties came out of her shell a bit and scored a few as the UWC defence kept Moore out. UWC came into the game, looking hopeful, but their defence struggled against the Maties attack. The second quarter ended 20-42 as Maties extended their lead.

Power Plays mean major excitement for the fans. UWC called theirs early in the third quarter and used it to put some valuable points on the board. Cindy Amsterdam, the UWC Goal Attack, is definitely a playmaker. Her, centre Keesha van Schalkwyk and Wing Attack Heike Swartz had a good understanding on the court, which translated to goals. Sadly it was not enough as Maties ended the third quarter on 29-61.

Although far behind, UWC did not give up the fight and continued to push for more goals. Maties changed their goal shooter and goal attack: Sian Moore and Nicole Taljaard made way for Charmaine Baard and Donné Kriel. But in the end the match ended UWC 37-76 Maties, as the Stellenbosch side bagged a full possible five log points.

It’s back to the drawing board for UWC as they leave Port Elizabeth disappointed. They next face a strong NWU on Sunday 2 September at the Callie Human Hall in Bloemfontein at 17:30. Maties will look to capitalise on a brilliant weekend when they play host to last year’s winners UP-Tuks at the Coetzenburg Indoor Centre at 19:00 on Sunday, 2 September. That match will also be live on SuperSport.
