The 2022 Confederation of University and College Sports Association Games is currently underway in Lilongwe, Malawi. The games see different universities in Africa gather and compete in various sporting fields including football, chess, basketball, athletics, netball, volleyball and tennis.
The University Sport South Africa team is representing the country in Athletics, Netball and Chess. Students participating at the games were selected from various Universities in South Africa at the USSA games in July 2022 to represent SA at the CUGSA Games.
The team yet again showcased amazing results on day two of the track and field events. In the women’s 200m event Geraldine King from the University of Western Cape walked away with a bronze medal.
In the 1500m event, the South African students took over by occupying the top three positions, Simonay Weitsz from Tshwane University of Technology grabbed gold, followed by Charne Swart from the University of Pretoria in second place, and Thobile Mkhize from Centraal University of Technology in third place. Both Swart and Weitsz grabbed medals in the 800m event on Wednesday.
Elsewhere in the women’s long jump, South Africa took another takeover with Joane Gerber from the University of the Free State grabbing gold, followed by Andrea Cornelissen from Stellenbosch University grabbing silver and Madrid Rabe from the University of the Free State earning bronze.
In Javelin, University of Stellenbosch student Jana van Schalkwyk bagged gold and in the 4x100m women’s relay the South Africans also walked away with gold – the team consisted of Andrea Cornelissen(Maties), Snetemba Ngema (UKZN), Joane Gerber (Kovsies) and Sokwakana Mogwasi (Kovsies).
In the 4x400m women’s relay, Simonay Weitsz(TUT), Charne Swart (UP-Tuks), Beatrice Themane(TUT) and Lizandre Mulder (Kovsies) added another gold to South Africa’s medal tally.
Simonay and Charne went on to win medals in the mixed relay event.
