The second of three events in the 2007 Kahuna Surf Series (KSS) will be run at Melkbosstrand on Saturday and Sunday, where more than 60 combined novices and future surf stars from all parts of the Cape Peninsula and Boland will do battle for valuable prizes and bragging rights.
The event start with the finals of the first event, which were postponed due to extreme weather and wave conditions at Muizenberg at the beginning of the month.
The first heats of the second event begin around 10am on Saturday with the finals scheduled for Sunday afternoon followed by the prize-giving and awards for both events.
The entry for Melkbos has been boosted by the inclusion of eight surfers from the Micah Surf Club in Macassar, whose participation has been sponsored by Puma Sports.
The sportswear brand has stepped in to cover the transport costs for the squad to attend the Melkbos as well as the Kommetjie event in December and is kitting them out with Puma T-shirts, caps and bags.
"We welcome Puma’s support enabling the Micah Surf groms to compete in the KSS events and from our side we have waived their entry fee," said Dene Botha of the Kahuna Surfing Academy.
"We also salute Alicia Keet and her Micah Surf organisers as well as Surfing South Africa whose efforts to provide youngsters from all communities with access to surfing and the healthy beach lifestyle is starting to bear fruit."
The series is supported by many of SA’s leading surf brands who provide thousands of Rands worth of prizes. Every competitor gets a gift pack at each event and there are substantial prizes ranging from custom surfboards, wetsuits and sunglasses to footwear and apparel for the series and event champions."
Companies and brands supporting the 2007 Kahuna Surf Series include Reef Wetsuits, Von Zipper eyewear, Kustom footwear, Palmer’s surf wax and accessories, Zigzag surf magazine, Lifestyle Surf Shop, Atlantic Surf, DVG Surfboards, Fox, Lizzard, Surf Zone and Billabong.
