Mighty EP Out of SARU IPT

SA Rugby logoThere will be a new Women’s Rugby Interprovincial champion this year, after defending A Competition champions Eastern Province completed their campaign with just one win from four games.

EP, four time winners of the IPT, lost 34-5 in their final round robin match against the Blue Bulls in Pretoria on Friday night. The Bulls, last year’s runners-up, led 8-0 at halftime.

A disappointed EP coach Eric Songwiqi told gsport: “That was our last game and we are disappointed to finish the competition on a losing note. We need to regroup and go back to the drawing board. We had good preparations for the match and were prepared physically and mentally but it just didn’t go our way.”

The Bulls are now third in Group A on 9 points, with one game to play, against SWD on 1 September.

Bulls coach Gerrit Oleofse was happy with the win but insisted his team needed to keep their and take it one game at a time.

Oleofse told gsport: “I think the team played to their strengths. We still have one game left. And Border must still play Western Province. So, anything can happen. The ball is not round. It is still 50-50.”

In other games this weekend, Western Province beat SWD 53-12 to move into top spot in Group A, with 13 points from three games.

KwaZulu-Natal beat Free State 26-11 to cement their position on the top of Group B, with 19 points from their four games.

Boland got their first win of the competition with a 34-10 win over the Golden Lions.

In the B competition, Blue Bulls Limpopo and Mpumalanga scored big wins. Mpumalanga top the log after beating the Leopards 52-22 in their final round robin match, while Blue Bulls Limpopo beat the Valke 61-24 and are now second on the log with a game in hand.
