Following a 2-year pandemic-imposed hiatus, all the finalists and guests were under one roof at the 2022 Momentum gsport Awards, the way this prestigious event is supposed to be! Of course, this momentous occasion meant that the red carpet at The Wanderers Club had to be at its best and glitziest! Needless to say, the finalists and all in attendance did not disappoint.

The Host with the Most!
We would be remiss to not start with the host Julia Stuart. This seasoned sports journalist extraordinaire took us through the program in a gold, hugging number and a bold classic red-lip to finish off her masterclass in sophistication on the Momentum #gsport17 stage. It’s worth stating though that we knew that she would look amazing on stage for the main event after her “starter”: a sweet pink dress on the red-carpet.

Theme?… Say No More!
Attending an event that has a dress code can get tricky – conceptualizing and appropriately adhering to the theme, to shopping for the outfit, all of it can be intimidating and daunting. You obviously don’t want to be the person that wears colourful pants at a cocktail dress themed event. So, the theme this year was Formal with a touch of Spring. Check our Instagram, these are the ladies, true to form, thoroughly embraced the theme.
Member of the Presenter squad, handling the Newsroom corner at the awards, Babsie Kutwana understood the assignment with a red, bold look. The dress was red in colour with a decorative flower embellishing a small portion at the top and a small detail around the waist. She accompanied that red number with a red short afro, completing the look.
“The dress I wore at the Momentum gsport Awards was a dress I had a connection to a few months ago. I was looking for a dress for my birthday that just said “goddess”. It was love at first sight! But then I parked it. When I was told to go for a fitting with Lynn, I knew exactly which dress I wanted and felt like a goddess in! I felt so beautiful in it!”
There are certain looks that are very memorable, unmissable because everywhere you look in the room there it is, on photos, there it is, on video, there is that bold, stunning look.
Not only was Nono Cele Xaba’s dress memorable but it commanded attention. The colour, the design. The best way to describe it is to go cliché, this piece was a Show Stopper. It was simply breathtaking. The winner of the SuperSport Woman in TV award will be remembered for many Momentum gsport Awards to come.
“I chose the dress because I wanted to wear something that matches my personality: beautiful, powerful and full of life. The dress immediately spoke to me because of the colour. It was such an honour being a finalist that I really wanted show up at my best.”
Simple Yet Sophisticated
Triple award winner Lara Van Niekerk’s black off shoulder dress, Caitlin’s Roozkrantz’s hint of red/orange slick red dress, supporter of the year Nakedi Thlathla in a tight-fitting pink dress and of course, 2021 Style and 2022 Imperial African Woman in Sport winner Akhona Makalima who never misses a beat, all epitomized elegance and pure class.
That Little Dress
We all know and have felt the pressure to own a Little Black Dress. The following ladies had the little number – it just wasn’t black, but we absolutely loved them. 2020 Woman in Radio winner Itumeleng Banda wore a short, cute, sexy red dress. She says she chose red, a colour she’s never worn. The perfect platform for a woman to get out of her comfort zone and discover how much the colour suits her.
“I wanted to look like a princess and what better way to channel my inner Princess than in a bold colour that yells confident, beautiful and sexy. LOL I won’t lie, I was afraid but I’m glad I did it.” We too are glad she did it.
2021 Woman in Social Award winner Lesego Pooe veered from the black and went for white. A short white suit dress, with an up-do and a pair of gold tear drop earrings. “Flawless” is the best my eyes and vocab could conjure immediately when seeing this beauty.
“For this year’s awards I decided to keep things very simple and timeless. I went to shop for this dress on the day of the awards. I paired my simple white blazer dress with bold gold earrings, with a bold red lip. I wanted an up-do hairstyle because I wanted to keep my look very slick. Also check the up-do – something I barely do, so I did it to just switch things up, do something different, out of the ordinary, something people don’t expect me to show up with.”
Valencia Seshoene’s little dress is made of colourful African Print and as you know, with that you can never go wrong. She looked vibrant, young and fun! She embodied the spirit of an evening of celebrating women. Her look, along with her short hair, would make any African women, globally, so proud!

Have a designer that is able to bring your vision to life and one who understands your body.
You have to be in love with your red carpet look, before you even hit that red carpet.
Babsie Kutwana
My advice for anyone who goes for red carpet looks is to firstly follow the theme. Follow the theme in your most authentic way. A way you feel you can best bring it to life but most importantly something that makes you feel special, something that will make you treasure that moment forever.
Lesego Pooe
Make sure you look your best. Be your best and don’t forget the confidence because that’s as important.
Nono Cele Xaba
Be comfortable and choose something that’s a presentation of who you are.
