As we mark our third #gsportGlobal anniversary, gsport celebrates 10 South African women in sport who are smashing records across the globe.
The list includes an array of athletes in various sporting codes, who have made an impact in tournaments including the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, Commonwealth Games, World Cups, African Championships as well as The Hundred cricket competition in England.
South African golfer Ashleigh Buhai makes the list after her history-making feat which saw her become only the second South African woman to win a major golf championship at the British Women’s Open in Scotland.
Star gymnast Caitlin Rooskrantz has been acknowledged for her achievements where she won gold and bronze at the 2022 Gymnastic World Cup held in Cairo. She then went on to win bronze on uneven bars during the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Footballer Hildah Magaia continues to get her flowers as her brace in the final of the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations against Morocco guided Banyana Banyana to their first-ever continental cup glory.
And, another notable feature in this list is teen swim sensation Lara van Niekerk, who has taken the sporting scene by storm this year. The 19-year-old won gold in the 50 and 100m breaststroke events at the Commonwealth Games and has earned her spot at the World Short Course in Melbourne, taking place in December.

Ashleigh Buhai – Golf
Buhai made history by becoming only the second South African woman to win a major golf championship at the British Women’s Open in Scotland. With this victory she added her name to an illustrious list of South African golfers to have won at Muirfield.
Buhai was then honoured at the 2022 Momentum gsport Awards with a Ministerial Recognition of Excellence accolade for her achievement.
Anruné Weyers – Para-Athletics
Anruné Weyers claimed gold in the final of the women’s 400m T47 category at the Tokyo Paralympics. She is a seasoned competitor with several major competitions under her belt.
Weyers went on to walk away with the Brand SA Para Sport of the Year award at the 2022 Momentum gsport Awards.
Bongi Msomi – Netball
Leading SPAR Proteas captain Bongi Msomi consistently leads the from the front with admirable performances on the Netball court in green and gold and ensures that she positively impacts communities in disadvantaged areas with her Bongi Msomi Legacy Project.
The 2022 Commonwealth Games flag bearer earned herself the Telkom Woman of the Year accolade at the 2022 Momentum gsport Awards.

Caitlin Rooskrantz – Gymnastics
Gymnast Caitlin Rooskrantz won gold and bronze at the 2022 Gymnastic World Cup held in Cairo. She then went on to win bronze on uneven bars during the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
At the 2022 Momentum gsport Awards, Rooskrantz was awarded the Ministerial Recognition of Excellence gong for her contributions to fly the country’s flag high on the international stage.
Hildah Magaia – Football
Trailblazer Magaia scored a brace to secure Banyana Banyana their first-ever TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title while plying her trade in the top division of women’s football in South Korea.
Since her continental feat, Magaia has won the hearts of South Africans which saw her win the Public Choice Award at the Momentum gsport Awards.

Kgothatso Montjane – Wheelchair Tennis
In the past year, Montjane has signed a host of personal endorsements and has been representing South Africa on the international stage. Recently, she earned a runners-up medal in the women’s doubles at the US Open.
Montjane is also holds the title as the most celebrated athlete on the Momentum gsport Awards stage.

Lara van Niekerk – Swimming
Swim sensation Lara van Niekerk won double gold, stealing the show in Birmingham at the Commonwealth Games. This over-achiever went further to earn herself a ticket to the World Short Course in Melbourne, taking place in December.
The 19-year-old was a big winner on the 2022 Momentum gsport Awards night, earning the Momentum Athlete of the Year, Sasol Global Woman in Sport and Ministerial Recognition of Excellence awards.

Marizanne Kapp – Cricket
Kapp’s outstanding performances for both club and country continue to be celebrated as her career meteorically rises year in and year out. In June this year, the all-round sensation was named the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for her standout performance for SA in the drawn one-off Test against England in Taunton.
She then went on to produce a Player of the Final performance for Oval Invincibles in The Hundred, guiding the team to their second successive title.

Michaela Whitebooi – Judo
Judoka Michaela Whitebooi celebrated gold in the women’s 48kg competition at Birmingham 2022, becoming one of the first two-time SA female judokas to reach the podium in Commonwealth history.
Whitebooi was also honoured at the 2022 Momentum gsport Awards as she earned the Ministerial Recognition of Excellence accolade.
Phiwokuhle Mnguni – Boxing
Phiwokuhle Mnguni from Dundee in KwaZulu-Natal, clinched bronze for South Africa in the Commonwealth Games at Birmingham 2022 to become the first South African female boxer to reach the podium at the Games.
At the 2022 Momentum gsport Awards, Mnguni was presented with the Emerging Athlete of the Year and Ministerial Recognition of Excellence awards.
