Kapp’s Hero of the Match Performance Guides Oval Invincibles to Second Consecutive The Hundred Title

Momentum Proteas all-rounder Marizanne Kapp’s match-winning performance guided Oval Invincibles to their second consecutive The Hundred crown on Saturday, 3 September 2022.

In a repeat of last year’s final against Southern Brave at Lord’s, the Invincibles restricted the Brave to 101-7 with a fine all-round bowling performance.

Shabnim Ismail and rising England star Alice Capsey took two wickets each, while 17-year-old spinner Sophia Smale also dismissed Sophia Dunkley for 26 – the highest score from Brave’s batting order.

Invincibles’ run-chase became increasingly tense, in front of a record crowd for a women’s domestic match, but Kapp steered the team to a five-wicket victory with six balls to spare.

Kapp ended on 37 not out, while Emily Windsor hit the winning runs to end unbeaten on 13.

Speaking on her heroic performance after the match, Kapp said: “It’s been an amazing journey. I have to credit to my team, they’ve all been amazing. You’re always nervous in finals, especially with low scores. It was really tough out there but luckily we got across the line.

“It was difficult, I probably should have been out a few times. But credit to Emily at the end, she took a lot of pressure off myself. Every single person has contributed, Caps [Capsey] is a talent and she’ll go far. Loved the tournament, it’s my favourite. The crowds have been amazing throughout. Thanks guys for coming out and supporting women’s cricket,” she concluded.

In 2021, Momentum Proteas skipper Dané van Niekerk scored the winning runs to bag the inaugural title.
