Zimbabwe Women lose out on a spot for the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, after a 4-run defeat to Ireland in the semi-final of the qualification round in Abu Dhabi on Friday, 23 September 2022.
Ireland were put into bat first after Zimbabwe won the toss and opted to bowl.
The Irish team went on to post 137/6, with vital contributions coming from the middle-order.
Star opener Gaby Lewis was dismissed in the Powerplay, but Orla Prendergast, fresh from her impressive knock last game, carried Ireland with 28 off 25 balls before she was dismissed in the 12th over.
In the run-chase, Sharne Mayers held the innings together for Zimbabwe with 39 off 36, paired with captain Mary Musonda who got 31 off 29 balls. The pair put up fifty-run stand before Mayers was dismissed.
As wickets continued to fall, Zimbabwe’s run-rate got steeper. They eventually fell short by 4-runs as their quest to make their first ever appearance at the ICC Women’s Cricket T20 Cricket World Cup will continue.
