Momentum kicked off its #SheOwnsHerSuccess campaign in August and held three events that featured speakers and masterclasses designed to inspire women to keep going for success again and again. The annual campaign, currently in its fourth season, aims to empower women with tools and advice that will catapult their efforts in achieving their unique definition of success.
Under the theme: ‘She’s going for it again!’ the workshops showcased a variety of local and international speakers who provided the thousands of women who attended the workshops practical tips and advice. Here are some of the take-outs from the event that we can all use in our lives:
It’s okay to take a breath: life can be overwhelming, and women often have a lot to juggle and never take a breath for themselves. One of the sessions at the workshop was with Dr. Ela Manga, integrated medical doctor committed to bringing heart back into the art of medicine. As she took us through breathing exercises in the workshops, she reminded us: “Now each of those breaths as much as they keep us alive, either can be contributing to burnout to stress to anxiety to inflammation to disease. Or can be contributing to a greater state of health and well-being and calm.” We left the workshops inspired to always remember to take a beat and a deep breath while pushing for success.
Why do you want to be successful? We all want success, but British life coach, YouTube personality, and writer Matthew Hussey challenged us to go deeper and ask ourselves why success was so important. He made us look at success differently and not just about what other people see. “I almost want to start by saying how can we get out of what I’m calling resume confidence on look how great I am because of everything I’ve achieved and into real confidence. So that we no longer need the resume anymore. Now in truth, I’m all for owning our success but I want to see my success as the traits that got me here. The beautiful parts of my character that make me who I am today the value I have as a person. If I make my success my achievements, then I’m not going to be focused on connecting with other people. I’m going to be focused on impressing other people; insecure people try to impress secure people connect.”
Financial success is not what you know but about how you behave. Business Consultant & Coach Zibu Masotobe gave us advice about how to stay consistent in your money journey to build up your financial success. ‘You already know how to attain financial success,’ she told the audience at the workshop. ‘I’m here to enable you to go for and keep going for it again.’
We also had lovely talks from CEO of the Female Quotient Shelley Zalis and the MC and radio presenter Sherlin Barends had a fantastic talk with academy-award winning actress Lupita Nyong’o. Head: Momentum Brand Marketing Charlotte Nsubuga-Mukasa also have a fascinating conversation with actress, director and producer Tasha Smith about thriving in the creative space.
The series of workshops ended off with a bang thanks to an eye-opening panel discussion on allyship called ‘My Brother, My Ally’ where an honest discussion was had about how men can be better allies and some of the challenges that they face being allies.
