A maiden century by Laura Wolvaardt, 95 by Trisha Chetty and a five-wicket-haul by Suné Luus saw the Momentum Proteas complete a comprehensive, 67-run victory over Ireland at Malahide in Dublin, on Women’s Day, Tuesday 9 August.
The tourists take an unassailable, 3-1 lead in the four-match ODI series.
Batting first after winning the toss, opener Wolvaardt’s century came off 125 balls, and ended when she was out bowled Louise McCarthy for 105, in an inspiring innings featuring 14 fours.
The school-going Wolvaardt’s potential is alluded to in her debut century in this match, added to two half-centuries in just seven innings since her first appearance in national kit, and an innings of 37.85 with a handy strike rate of 64.65 to go with it.
With her at the crease for most of her innings, Chetty’s 95 off 130 balls included nine fours, and the pair put on the bulk of the visitor’s innings a 192-run opening stand to lead South Africa to an innings total of 260/6.
Ireland openers set off at a brisk pace, taking 38 runs off opening bowlers Odine Kirsten and Moseline Daniels before Clare Shillington was out bowled by Kirsten for 25.
Two wickets later her opening partner Una Raymond-Hoey lost her wicket for the same total, caught and bowled Luus, one of the three c&b wickets she claimed in her innings total of five wickets, a performance she has now repeated in back-to-back internationals, underlying her worth to South Africa.
Ireland’s batting reply was eventually snuffed out by the same Luus, when they were bowled out for 193 off the final ball of the 45th over, when Luus’ fifth wicket had Ciara Metcalfe caught Lara Goodall.
Luus enjoyed good assistance from Ayabonga Khaka, who chipped in with 2/31 in her nine overs.
The visitors will look to end the series on a high and complete a whitewash, when they meet in the last match on Thursday.
