Momentum Proteas Skipper Welcomes New WBBL Deal

by | Sep 30, 2021

Momentum Proteas captain, Dané van Niekerk, has scored a deal to represent the Adelaide Strikers in the Women’s Big Bash League season, which is scheduled to take place from Thursday, 14 October 2021.

For the past five seasons, van Niekerk played a pivotal role for the Sydney Sixers, leading the team to two league titles.

The Proteas women’s skipper is close on 1 000 WBBL runs and has claimed 74 wickets in 76 matches.

“I’m so excited to be joining the Strikers this year and very excited to join the team. I hope to make the fans proud,” van Niekerk told Strikers’ official website.

Strikers head coach Luke Williams is confident that the international will inject a wealth of knowledge into the group.

“We are excited to welcome Dané into the group, she is someone that brings a huge amount of experience and talent that will be a massive benefit to our WBBL|07 campaign,” said Williams.

“It is no coincidence that Dané has played in and captained winning teams, she leads by example and always performs on the biggest stages.

“Dané comes to Australia in incredible form off the back of c and South Africa’s tour of the West Indies and we can’t wait to see her take the field as a Striker.”

Fellow South African teammate, Laura Wolvaardt, re-signed with Strikers for another season and is looking forward to playing alongside her national team captain.

The Adelaide Strikers get their WBBL campaign under way this season when they face the Thunder Strikers on Saturday, 16 October in Hobart.
