After three days of easterly gales prior to the start of the South African Port Operations Border Ladies Championships being played at the East London Golf Course, the weather cleared on Sunday to allow the ladies to bring out their best.
Gauteng’s Lizelle Muller faired best of the A Division scratch to 9-handicap group, comfortably winning the Sunday Strokeplay competition by a clear 11 shots, finishing her two rounds of 75 and 74 on the 73-par course for a total of three-over 149.
Local girl Millie Zim was next-best, her two rounds of 79 and 81 giving a competitive 160 finish, with Shirley Pollock finishing third with two rounds of 81 shots down, two shots behind Zim.
In a closely-fought B Division featuring golfers of handicaps between 10 and 18, Janine van der Merwe finished best on 171, two ahead of Tessa Boyd and Lesley Conroy on 173, one ahead of fourth-placed Pru Rigby.
In the 19-30 handicap C Division, Par Sonemann (188) beat off Sharon Hatting (206) and Michelle Atkinson (214) to top the leaderboard.
In attempts to include South African Gold Development Board players Viwe Banzi, Andiswa Jabe, Siphokazi Queliso, Ayabonga Roji, Sinazo Sovili and Phelokazi Tayo, the Border Ladies Champs arranged for these players to compete in a special division.
“They aren’t members of clubs, and they therefore don’t have a WGSA-recognised handicap. This is a real step-up for them, playing in the Border Championships,” said outgoing Border Ladies Golf President Bev MacLean.
Commenting on her stint as Border President coming to an end, MacLean said: “I’ve had a good spell, and I’ve really enjoyed it, and I’m happy to hand over. Muffy Parsons is doing a good job, and there comes a time for everybody.”
The new executive headed by Parsons takes over after this year’s tournament ends.
