South African girls in surfing action this week in Australia include Nikita Robb, Tammy Lee Smith and Rosy Hodge, who are both entered for the five-star Midori Pro at Merewether Beach, in New South Wales.
Speaking to gsport since her first ASP World Tour event last week, Rosy admitted to a case of nerves. “I think the most nerve-racking event is the first one, because you the new kid on the block.
“You have a feeling that you have to prove yourself to the people watching. I was stoked I managed to beat (world number two Sofia Mulanovich), one of the girls that I think rips, and I’m going to build and learn from the experience so I can do better in the next one.”
On her prospects at the Midori Pro, Rosy is cautious but positive: I’ve never been to Newcastle so I’m looking forward to it. The competition is super-stiff, because all the girls are here. But I’m hoping to use what I’ve learnt from the previous competitions, and have fun with my surfing.”
Being one of 17 girls on the exclusive global tour, Rosy benefited from a bye for the early stages of the Midori Pro, and she will shortly join Nikita, who topped her second-round heat with a score of 6.5 off four waves, to progress to round three.
Nikita will surf heat 1 of the third round against 19-year old Australian sensation Stephanie Gilmore (another top World Tour surfer), Brazilian Suelen Naraisa, and Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons.
Tammy Lee Smith is entered for heat 5 against Hawaii’s Megan Abubo (WT surfer), and Australians Lyndsay Noyes and Kira Townsend, while Rosy will contest heat 10 against Australians Laurina McGrath and Ellen Black, with the USA’s Kim Mayer making up the numbers.
The prediction for tomorrow is an increasing southerly swell, with accompanying light onshores.
Thursday looks set to provide superb surfing conditions for Merewether, with a strong southerly swell boosted by a 13 second period that will be fanned by morning offshore winds.
