Wenda Nel (formally Theron) and Annerie Ebersohn will meet each other again in the 400m hurdles at the SA Open Championships, set to take place on Saturday, 25 May 2013 at the McArthur Stadium in Tlokwe (Potchefstroom).
The event should be one of the highlights of the championships, as Nel and her training partner go head-to-head again after the former champion lost her title at the SA Senior Championships.
Her foot hooked on the last hurdle, effectively costing her the title. Nel has since competed in Brazil at three events, where she regained some form and finished second on all occasions.
Her last race, on 19 May, was a season’s best of 56.09sec. Ebersohn did not compete again after winning at the University Championships in Durban on 28 April.
“I want to see if I can break the 56sec barrier on Saturday. Annerie is in great shape at the moment, but I’d rather want the good time,” said the 24 year-old Nel ahead of the championships.
Also at the Open Champs, the talented 17 year-old 800m athlete Gena Lofstrand will line up in the 800m on Saturday after making a name for herself by not only winning the SA Junior Championships, but also adding the senior title to her name with a season’s best of 2:04.60 after a very gutsy performance a week later.
On 18 April Lofstrand competed at the Mauritius International Meet, finishing second in 2:04.80 in a race won by Mapaseka Makhanya in 2:03.93.
The Open will also feature top athletes Philippa van der Merwe in the 100m and 200m, Sonja van der Merwe in the 400m, Samantha Pretorius in the 100m and long jump, Elizna Naude in the discus throw, Rorisang Rammonye in the 400m and Julia du Plessis in the high jump.
Athletes will not compete for their provinces at the championships, but will compete individually for their clubs. A fee of R20 will be payable by all athletes for a race number at the call room.
Entries can be sent directly to Central North West Athletics by email [email protected] or by entering on the day, as entries will be accepted at the call room up to an hour before an event.
Spectators are urged to support the athletes on the day, as entrance to the stadium will be free. The first event will start at 08:00 with the program concluding at 15:15 with the 10 000m walk.
