Sports Entertainment Network has announced former England coach Tracey Neville as the new coach of the newest Suncorp Super Netball team. With the new outfit yet to be named, Neville is already confirmed to be making a move away from the Adelaide Thunderbirds where she worked as an assistant coach after they won the title in the 2023 Championship.
The Englishwoman coached England between 2015 and 2019 and led them to a historic Commonwealth Games gold medal on the Gold Coast in 2018. She boasts additional coaching accolades with the Manchester Thunder in England’s Netball Superleague, assisting them to Championship glory in 2012, 2014, and 2022. She also earned 81 caps as a player.
SEN CEO of Teams, Richard Simkiss, is delighted to have acquired the services of such an experienced and respected coach for the new franchise: “I’m thrilled to welcome Tracey as the inaugural coach of the newest Suncorp Super Netball team. We are determined that the team will be a genuine contender from the beginning, and we couldn’t be more confident that we have found the best person to help us achieve that.”
Simkiss believes this appointment will send a message to other teams, “Tracey’s outstanding experience and determined attitude to build this team from the ground up really stood out, and we think it is a great fit to put a strong stamp on our new team from the outset; to be a destination club with such an exciting journey ahead.”
The side will replace Collingwood, who quit the eight-team competition at the end of the 2023 season and will be based in Melbourne’s south-east.
Neville is looking forward to the opportunity to build the new team: “I’m delighted to be accepting this role and the next challenge in my coaching career. After winning the Grand Final with the Adelaide Thunderbirds last year there was no doubt that Australia was where I wanted to be and continue my coaching.”
“The opportunity to put myself forward for this role came unexpectedly but at the right time. There was no doubt as I went through the interview process the shared vision, mission and values of this company confirmed that this was a place where I wanted to be. The blueprint is yet to be written but whilst we are creating this we get to be part of creating a new history and legacy that will continue into the future, this is what excites me the most and opens up new possibilities for staff, players and netball fans in Victoria.”
The new team is yet to recruit any players, with Neville at the Netball World Cup in South Africa with her eyes and ears wide open.
