Contest director Luke Egan had no hesitation in starting the event promptly at dawn and Nikita Robb was the SA squad’s first casualty. The 17 year-old East London recorded 5.17 and 6.67 point rides and held the lead until the last minute when her opponent, Alize Arnaud (FRA), was awarded 6.33 for her last ride and a berth in the women’s quarter-finals
After top seed Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) had justified her status as favourite for the women’s title with a scintillating performance that included the day’s and joint event highest score of 9.17 points (out of 10), and last year’s runner-up Nicola Atherton had snatched victory in the dying seconds of her third round heat to advance, Egan started round three of the men’s event.
