The South African Football Association (SAFA) has confirmed the appointment of Nombuso Maude Khumalo as head coach of the SAFA Girls’ High Performance Centre, announced from SAFA House in Johannesburg on Saturday, 9 May 2026.
Former University of Pretoria Ladies coach Khumalo holds a CAF A Coaching Licence, and brings with her more than 10 years of coaching experience, alongside an illustrious playing career as a former Banyana Banyana national team player.
Her extensive coaching experience also includes appointments as Interim Assistant Coach of the Senior Women’s National Team, Assistant Coach of the U17 Women’s National Team, Head Coach of the U20 Women’s National Team, and Manager and Head Coach of the UP Hollywoodbets Women’s Team.
The SAFA Girls’ High Performance Centre sits at the heart of the Association’s elite development pathway for young female footballers, identifying scholarship players through provincial roadshow trials and feeding directly into the U17 Bantwana, U20 Basetsana and Banyana Banyana programmes.

Khumalo has risen steadily through the SAFA technical structures, previously coaching the Tuks Ladies before taking charge of Banyana Banyana at the 2024 COSAFA Women’s Championship in Gqeberha, where her youthful side reached the final and lost to Zambia on penalties.

Khumalo will report directly to SAFA Technical Director Molefi Ntseki, and is widely respected in South African women’s football for a holistic coaching philosophy that asks players to balance education with the game.
The CAF A Coaching Licence is one of the highest qualifications in African football and a prerequisite for head coaches in CAF continental club competitions such as the Champions League. Delivered by SAFA Coaching Education across four phases and 200 hours of theoretical and practical study.
