UJ and Golden Fireballs’ Owethu Ngubane is continuing to rise in her netball career as she recently represented the country in New Zealand.
Ngubane was part of the team that earned silver at the tournament, after a stellar performance on court.
As a young and rising star, Ngubane has a list of growing achievements. This year, she was also part of the historic Golden Fireballs team that won their maiden Telkom Netball League crown.
Speaking with Rudene Hare, Ngubane chats about her journey to date and reveals her proudest achievements.
Owethu, thank you for chatting to us here at gsport. Please introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello I am Owethu Ngubane, I play for UJ netball and also a student at the university.
You were part of the SA Fast 5 team that won silver at the Fast 5 Netball World Series. Please can you tell us about that experience.
It was a great experience for all of us, especially for some of us it was our first time playing international and Fast 5 netball. Representing our country at Fast 5 was a massive, important responsibility, but at the same time it was fun.
What is the difference between Fast 5 Netball and the normal Netball we know?
Fast 5 Netball is a very different game in its own ways, it has different rules and you learn a lot about the space on court, the way you use your space is very important, being smart about it.
What position do you play and what is your role?
I play GS/GA. I score goals for the team. My responsibility is to convert every ball I get.
What have you learnt from the competition?
I have learnt a lot as a young player and also I have showcased my talents to the world that anything is possible even if you are a young player ,do not give up no matter what.
Who are some women you admire and why?
Bongiwe Msomi is my inspiration and I really look up to her as a young player.
What are some of your proudest achievements in your career so far?
The first one is when I got Best Shooter in the Telkom Netball League and it’s was my first time playing TNL.
Secondly, representing South Africa in the Fast 5 games.
What are some of the challenges that you continue to experience?
Still working on reaching my goal but I am getting there.
Telkom is playing a major role in netball with the Telkom Netball League and Telkom Netball Championship. What are your views on their impact in the sport?
Netball is a growing sport in our country and Telkom has really helped in promoting the growth of it and creating exposure for us as upcoming netball players. The Telkom Netball League and champs have created a vital role in improving my game and giving me and other players the platform and opportunity to be recognized and for our talent to be showcased to the country and the world.
The Telkom Netball League is the biggest netball league in our country and is the highest league that any netball player would want to play in because it offers the best teams in our country and best players from different provinces to compete, thus growing the sport even further. I played the league when I was still in high school and that was when I was recognized and invited to the Spar Proteas camp, so for me I’ll always be grateful for that opportunity and that platform even though it was hard.
Lastly, what advice can you give other young girls who would like to get into this industry/sport?
Never give up no matter what happens in life, keep on pushing, anything is possible if you are passionate about it and really want to reach your goal in life.
