Pace Best Placed in Switzerland

Lee-Anne Pace is the best-placed of four South Africans after the first round of the Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open, at the Golf Gerre Losone, Switzerland, when she recorded an even-par 72 to finish four off the leading pack.

The tournament overnight leaderboard was topped by a group of four, after Britain’s Eleanor Pilgrim, Australia’s Nikki Garrett, Germany’s Bettina Hauert and Switzerland’s Frederique Seeholzer each carded four-under par 68 first-round scores.

Garrett will fancy her chances, having won her first professional title against the same field at the Ladies Spanish Open in Castellon on Sunday, when she beat England’s Rebecca Hudson by one stroke for a winning total of 13-under par 275 at Club de Campo Mediterraneo.

Also playing are newly-announced professional Ashleigh Simon in her rookie professional tournament, Stacey Lee Bregman and Laurette Maritz, who placed a very good 5th overall position in last week’s Ladies Spanish Open, finishing nine-under par 279 for a Euro11,660 pay check.

Maritz trailed Pace by two overnight for a 2-over par 74, and Simon will be disappointed with her first pro tournament jitters, after carding a 5-over 77, to lead former amateur team-mate Bregman by one.

The tournament defending champion Gwladys Nocera had a 73 for a share of 31st position, but remains five strokes behind the leaders, and after her third-place to Garrett on the weekend, will believe herself to be very much in the competition.
