The Durban Open Women’s Volleyball tournament was a hive of activity this past weekend, which saw Palesa Masinga and her partner, Natasha Webber secure top honours at North Beach on Sunday, 16 April 2023.
The tournament, which took place from Saturday, 15 April, was supported by beauty brand LUX South Africa through the #ChangeTheAngle campaign, which aims to highlight sexism in sport and challenge media to change the focus of women sport coverage from one that objectifies female athletes to one that celebrates their sporting prowess and achievements.

Speaking to gsport after their victory 2-1, Masinga said: “It feels amazing, especially because it wasn’t an easy final. We worked, we grinded, we fought tooth and nail to win this final. So, the feeling is really great that we came out at the top, our efforts paid off.”
The tournament also provided a platform for rising stars to showcase their talents and further develop the sport.
“It was great to see the youngsters, who are coming up and playing proper beach volleyball and seeing them putting in the effort and putting in the time to knowing the skills, the rules and different tactics.”
With 2023 being the year for women’s sport, Masinga expressed her views on the state of women’s sport: “It is progressing nicely! And, I’m not only talking about my sport, specifically, I’m talking about team sport because it’s harder for team sport to progress, whereas individual sport it’s an individual player and they can train and do what they need to do to win. But, as a team sport, you need team effort.
“It’s incredible to see what is happening in terms of cricket, soccer doing amazing! We are growing step by step!”
Masinga and Webber were honoured with a R25 000 cash prize for their efforts over the 2-day tournament.
