Peek and Mackenzie Stave off Strong Competition

by | Jan 17, 2022

The new crew of Jordy Peek and Christie Mackenzie staved off strong challenge from the brand-new combination of Abby Solms and Bianca Haw to win the Lighthouse Designs Ozzie Gladwin title on Sunday, 16 January 2022.

Peek reveals it was a tough race: “From the five women’s boats that got away at the front on the dam we got it down to three boats by the time we got to the flats on the uMngeni.

“It was a tough race with the element of portaging, rapids and flat water to test the waters,” she added.

“It has been awesome paddling with Christie. We haven’t done much time together in a boat but she was super strong today (Sunday) and I am really enjoying paddling with her at the moment.

“She has recently recovered from having Covid so it is good to know that she is fully over that,” she concluded.

The big field that took part in the race used the days paddling and portaging as key training for the MyLife Dusi in a months’ time, with the elites banking key seeding points for the big race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, and the new MyLife Dusi Series.
