Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia will battle it out in the 8th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations scheduled to kick off on Monday, 17 January 2022, at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium in Accra, Ghana.
South Africa who has won the last six editions of the competition will be aiming to continue with their dominance as they search for a 7th title.
Zambia will be making their debut appearance in the tournament and are looking forward to a good outing. Their coach, Flody Chomba says that he will be vying on experienced players like Martha Nankala, Annie Mvula and goalkeeper, Esther Mwale to make it past the group stage.
Ghana, who have been preparing for this tournament since the Africa Cup of Club Champions (ACCC) last month, will be hoping to qualify for the World Cup for the first time. According to Coach Amore, South Africa will be their biggest rivals as the two teams have battled each other in the final of the last four editions.
Kenya have been in intense training since May 2021 and will be hoping to make a podium finish. The Jacqueline Mwangi coached side last made it on the podium in 2013 when they won bronze in Egypt.
In 2017 they finished 4th losing the bronze medal match to Nigeria. Meanwhile, Nigeria will be hoping to improve their global standing as their squad is mainly made up of Africa Cup of Club Champions silver medallist holders, Delta Queens.
After missing out on the last three editions of the competitions, Namibia will be aiming to win their 5th medal in the competition.
Uganda who recently suffered a whitewash against Kenya in the test match series will be seeking for a miracle to progress past the group stage.
The winners of the competition will earn a ticket to represent Africa at the FIH World Cup scheduled to be held in Terrassa, Spain and Amstelveen, Netherlands from the 1-17 July 2022.
