Peninsula Secure 3rd Win

 

Match seven of the SPAR Hockey Inter-Provincial in Cape Town featured Witwatersrand and the Eastern Province Settlers, with both teams needing to make progress on Wednesday with an eye on Saturday’s Finals, in Hartleyvale, Cape Town.

 

Having lost 8-0 to in-form Peninsula on Tuesday, Martyn van Zyl’s Settlers were hoping to regain their first day progress, but were held to a one-all dead-lock at half-time, and Kirsty Forssman’s goal for Wits in the 47th minute meant that the Eastern Cape team remained on three points.

Next up were early tournament silver spoon contenders Free State and Boland, and Boland’s Dedri Prinsloo made sure of a team-lifting boost just before half-time, when she sunk a penalty corner opportunity, for a 1-nil edge which neither team was able to improve on.

 

Free State remains bottom of the log without a point in the tournament, while Boland edged the EP Settlers, also on three points, on goal difference.

 

The final B-section fixture of the day featured high-rolling Peninsula against the improving North West, in a clash which could feature Saturday’s finalists, and the score-line suggests that a repeat clash could go either way, despite Peninsula’s unbroken record in the event.

 

In predictable fashion, Peninsula drew first blood through Elzanne Jacob’s sixth-minute field-goal, but Adam Wilson’s North West outfit struck back a via an Ilse Fourie penalty corner a minute later to level scores.

 

Any victory dancing on the part of North West was however early, as Peninsula struck back immediately via another short corner of their own, for a 2-1 half-time lead, to which Peninsula’s Michelle de Kock added a field goal in the 54th minute for a convincing win for the Cape-based squad.
