A blend of resilience, skill, and gritty fightback from Suné Luus and Marizanne Kapp keeps South Africa’s hopes alive as the Proteas finish on 236/4 at stumps on day two of the one-off IDFC First Bank Test Match against India in Chennai, on Saturday, 29 June, 2024.
Day two began with Harmanpreet Kaur and Richa Ghosh putting their dominance on show as they steadily added 68-runs to the overnight total before Kaur (69) was trapped LBW by Tumi Sekhukhune. Ghosh (86) missed out on a century as she too was trapped LBW by Nonkululeko Mlaba 7 balls later.
With the fall of Ghosh’s wicket, India declared on 603/5, the highest total in women’s test cricket history, and set South Africa a massive total to get.
Tumi Sekhukhune finished with figures of 1/70 and Nonkululeko Mlaba contributed with 1/122, as they created the much-needed break throughs for the visitors on day two.
Bosch was joined by Luus and they provided a much-needed boost of 63-runs before Deepti Sharma took a superb catch off the bowling of Rana to send Bosch (39) back to the change room.
It was left to Luus and Marizanne Kapp to steady the ship. Luus played a crucial innings, combing caution with aggression as she brought up her maiden Test half-century. The Proteas pair continued to grind on, adding valuable runs to the board.
Kapp produced a calm and collected half-century, becoming the leading women’s Test run scorer for South Africa. Deepti Sharma broke the 93-run partnership when she trapped Luus (65) LBW.
With South Africa on 189/3, Kapp and Delmi Tucker had to keep a cool head. The woes of battling the Indian spinners continued the torment South Africa, as Tucker (0) was dismissed by Ghosh who took a brilliant low catch off the bowling of Rana.
Kapp (69*) and Nadine de Klerk (27*) added a valuable 36-runs, as South Africa ended on 236/4 at the call of stumps, trailing by 367 runs. The incisive spell from Rana produced figures of 3/61 for India.
Will it be South Africa that shows their fight by bridging the deficit, or will India capitalise with their bowling attack, as we look ahead to an intriguing day of cricket on day three.
Play will resume at 06h00 (SAST), and will be broadcast live on SuperSport Grandstand (Ch 201).
