Carla Botha opened the score for Southern Gauteng shortly before half-time from a field-goal for a one-nil half-time score against the KZN Midland team, in the Highveld team’s championship title quest in the SPAR Women’s Hockey Inter-Provincial tournament, at the Hartleyvale Stadium in Cape Town on Tuesday.
Sharne Bailey took advantage of a penalty corner to double the score after half-time, and a field goal by Anika Fischer in the 62nd minute consigned one victors KZN Midlands to their first defeat in the 2007 tournament.
In the second fixture of the day, Northerns secured their first win with a 3-1 win over Eastern Province, who remain without a point in the tournament despite the efforts Tammy Boggenpoel, who’s field goal levelled the score after Dirkie Chamberlain’s 13th-minute opener.
But Chamberlain opened Northern’s advantage in the second half, and Marcelle Keet finished the matter five minutes later to put her team on the board.
In the final match of the day, Western Province scored a 3-1 victory over KwaZulu-Natal to remain level at the top of the leaderboard with likely co-finalist Southern Gauteng, each leading the league by a clear three points.
