South African swimmer, Rebecca Meder broke Kathryn Meaklim’s 13-year-old long standing record in the women’s 200m individual medley heat by clocking 2:07:47, seven split seconds faster than Meaklim’s 2:07:54 record at the 2022 World Short Course Championships in Melbourne, Australia on Tuesday, 13 December.
Although the 20-year-old managed to break the record in her heat, she was .22 of a second slower to book herself a spot in the final.
Elsewhere, Stephanie Houtman won her 400m freestyle heat, but her time of 4:13.16 was 19th fastest and not enough to book a spot in the final. Mila Drakopoulos also struggled on the day finishing 36th in the 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:01.52, while Emily Visage ended up 32nd in the 50m butterfly heat in just 28.39 seconds.
Caitlyn de Lange joined Drakopoulos, Visagie and Meder in the 4x100m freestyle relay where they set a New African record of 3:41.57, despite setting the record the team’s time was enough to qualify for finals. The previous record of 3:41.80 was set 10 years ago by Trudi Maree, Lehesta Kemp, Megan Stephens and Vanessa Mohr.
The championship will conclude on Sunday, 18 December.
