Records Tumble in First Two Rounds of Varsity Netball

We’ve only had eight matches in Varsity Netball 2018, but already a number of competition and team records have been wiped out of the records books and replaced by 2018.

Goals, goals, goals
The most prominent record and one that might stand for some time to come, is the most goals scored in a match. It was previously the 125 scored last year between Tuks and UWC in Pretoria. It was surpassed by a massive 29 goals on Monday in Bloemfontein when NWU (81) and Tuks (73) contributed to the 154 goal feast. Not surprisingly both teams’ shooters had a great evening, shooting above 87% both ways.

Losing streak
Unfortunately VUT contributed to the other competition record, that of most consecutive losses. VUT has now lost 19 on the trot since their last victory in 2015.

Champions buckle
An understrength Tuks suffered both their biggest loss (by 25 goals to Kovsies) and conceded their highest number of goals (the 81 against NWU) in their competition history. It has only happened once before, in 2013, that they experienced two successive losses.
The defending champions were without a couple of their players and a couple of them who did play, had very little time to recover from a long flight back from New Zealand where the Jaguars still played their last match on Friday morning (South African time) in the Super Club tournament.

Leaky defence
The 73 goals scored against NWU by Tuks was also the most ever against the Potchefstroom students.

Maties on fire
Finally, the Maties got their competition off to a solid start on Sunday against VUT, registering two team records. The 65-goal winning margin is their biggest and the 92 goals scored their most in a match.
