The SPAR SA Netball Proteas have exceeded expectations to book a place in the Fast5 World Netballs Series semi-finals – against the team they beat to qualify – in Auckland, New Zealand, this morning.
The South African team staged an early match comeback in their first of three fixtures of the day to edge Australia 28-27, and record their first win over the tough opposition in the game’s short-form.
Tournament hosts New Zealand brought SA back to ground in their second fixture, when the Silver Ferns beat SA 52-19, with an overwhelmed SA defence and the Proteas’ 48% shooting accuracy hurting the cause.
In their final match, SA stuck to their Supergoals-seeking strategy which worked well against Australia, and their shooting for maximum points saw them beat Malawi’s Queens 48-34 to qualify for the tournament semi-finals.
