Following the injury of Gabriela Salgado, Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis has called up Rhoda Mulaudzi as replacement. Salgado suffered an injury on Wednesday, 8 June 2022.

The JVW midfielder fell and broke her collarbone while playing for her Hollywoodbets Super League side in a midweek match against Bloemfontein Celtic Ladies.

The injury will see her out of action for eight weeks which will be a major setback for Desiree Ellis’ squad with less than a month to the 2022 African Women Cup of Nations in Morocco.

“It is a massive loss because she has been a key player for us. But this also gives others in the squad an opportunity to step up. We wish Gabby a speedy recovery,” she said.

Ellis released a preliminary list of 28 players that are expected to resume camp on Friday, 10 June 2022. She’s also expected to whittle down her squad even more with the final squad being announced before their departure to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco on 21 June.

The Southern African giants open their Group C campaign with a thrilling clash against arch nemesis, Nigeria, on 4 July. The rest of the group stages will see them battle Botswana and Burundi.
