Kenya’s Ruth Chepngetich successfully defended her Chicago Marathon crown at the 44th edition of the race on Sunday, 9 October 2022.
Chepngetich narrowly missed out on the World Record by 14 seconds, as she won her second consecutive Chicago Marathon women’s title in a time of 2:14:18. This is the second fastest time in history, after compatriot Brigid Kosgei set the mark on the same flat course three years ago.

Speaking after the race, the 28-year-old said: “I wanted to break the World Record… but I’m happy.
“Next year, I’m ready to come back again.”
The win made her the first woman in history to break 2:18 on three separate occasions: 2:17:08 in Dubai (2019) and 2:17:18 in Nagoya, Japan earlier this year.
American Emily Sisson finished second in 2:18:29 and Kenyan Vivian Jerono Kiplagat came in third in 2:20:52.
